As endurance athletes we have at one time or other bonked or hit the wall, sometimes even during a shorter race or training run. Typical symptoms are light-headedness or dizziness but always a need to slow down or even a desire to stop running is there. The normal cause of this is lack of fuel, our tanks are near empty and however much our minds tell us to keep going our bodies can’t without more energy.
These days with all the technology we can get all sorts of running fuel. It comes in sachets to carry with us and concentrates to mix with water, but mostly these are chemicals and have a limited effect. Yes they give us energy to get through the race but what does it do to our bodies in the long run?
We don’t only need to provide sustenance to our bodies when we exercise but all the time. It’s a bit like only filling our cars with petrol but not servicing them or adding oil. At some point or other, even though we have a full tank of fuel, we will grind to a halt with a burnt-out clutch, or an injury.
Like a car we need fuel (to run), but we also need to repair and refuel (unlike a car, to grow stronger and fitter and yes, faster). We also need lubrication to keep our parts (joints and nervous system) running smoothly and of course unlike our car, we need to recover and this means getting rid of all the free radicals that build up while we run. On top of this we need to drink enough water not only to replace what we lose when we run, but because without it,
we will not make the most of the fuel, lubricants and anti-oxidants we feed ourselves.
What we need to do then is provide our “running machines” with an ongoing supply of the above ingredients. Not only when we actually head out the door, but all day, every day.
But good nutrition for sports people do not only apply to runners, it is crucially important to all—professional or amateur, sport enthusiast or even anybody who prefers an active lifestyle!
